Presidential Comedy Will Go Ahead In 2012

Warner Bros have won the race to become the production company for a comedy that will be released during the real-life 2012 Presidential elections in the fourth quarter of that year.

The film will be directed by Jay Roach, and will star Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as the rival candidates in a comedy that is likely to be a humourous take on the campaigns (featuring fictitious candidates and events) in the heat of the debate season.

The unnamed comedy pitch will be written by Chris Henchy, and produced by Ferrell alongside Adam McKay under the banner of Gary Sanchez Productions and Roach through his Everyman Pictures brand.

The CAA-brokered sale of the rights to the film closed on Saturday, with Warner Brothers gaining the exclusive rights, and is said to be throwing a ‘full budget’ towards the project, which has seen good results in other movies starring Ferrell, who has appeared in hits such as The Other Guys, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Elf, amongst many others while Galifianakis will in 2011 be reprising his role in The Hangover Part II after a box-office hit in the original. This movie is not the first time that Will Ferrell and Jay Roach have worked together, as Ferrell had a minor role in two movies of the Roach-produced Austin Powers series.

Will Ferrell, alongside his many movies (including new animated hit, Magamind) , also has a presence in the online world, with his website, Funny Or Die, allowing users to upload their comedy short videos, and have them rated by the website community.

ELYSIUM (teaser!)

District 9 producer Neill Blomkamp isn’t planning on straying too outside of his comfort zone with his second movie, Elysium. It’ll be another socio-political science-fiction thriller, and it’ll once again star Sharlto Copley.

Elysium is being described as having “similar storytelling ideas” to the movie that made Blomkamp’s name, but aside from being set in the future on another planet, the plot is staying under wraps for now. The movie is currently being shopped to potential distributors as budgets and casting are being finalized. Aside from Copley, no other casting has been announced.
